Healthy Twist on Frozen Kid Favorite Meals

New Product Launch!

Mom Made is proud to introduce two new Mom Made Meals - Buttered Noodles with Chicken Meatballs and Cheesy Noodles with Beef Meatballs - that are now available in freezers at select Walmart and Safeway stores.

“We’re excited about these two new kid-favorite meals launching into stores nationally. These are the familiar, tasty meals that kids are clamoring for and that parents will turn to, knowing they'll result in big smiles and happy tummies,” said company founder and CEO Heather Stouffer. “With Mom Made’s Buttered Noodles with Chicken Meatballs and Cheesy Noodles with Beef Meatballs, we continue to broaden access, expand our product line and create a destination for health-conscious parents in the freezer aisle. These antibiotic-free, low sodium, protein rich and nutritious meals were tested extensively with kids and received excellent feedback.”

Seventeen kids came to celebrate the launch of the meals. Watch their reactions in this recorded live tasting.

Behind-the-scenes with Discovery Channel

The 4 min "How It's Made" segment of Mom Made Cheese Pizza Munchie took 16 hours to film. It was a long but very fun day. The popular "How It's Made" show has been airing for 15 years so successfully that their strategy is to keep using the same technology and style that they always have. This means rather than high-tech, light weight cameras, they still lug around the 250 lb lights and cameras for each clip. They were meticulous about the filming every part of our process. The segment came out beautifully.

Here's one of our favorite photos from the shoot.

9 Mom Made Highlights in 9 Years

Farmer's Market

9) Launch day at the Del Ray Farmer’s Market in Alexandria VA.   I awoke at 5 am to make a trip to our commercial kitchen I was renting at the time to pull product out of the freezer and have the stand set up by 7 am. After seven months of full-time business planning, it was awesome to see everything come together that morning on that sunny day in late May 2006. My family and friends came to support me and even more fun was meeting our first customers. We still have our first dollar from that day framed on our wall. It’s a day that is crystal clear in my memory.

8) Having a sales background, the thought of getting my foot in the door of our first retailers was daunting but a very fun challenge for me. Whole Foods Mid-Atlantic’s buyer was my first buyer meeting. She said she’d like to put our foods into their 35+ stores in the region. I took a deep breath and said, “I don’t think we can do that right now because we’re making it all by hand. Lets start with the 8 stores in Virginia then grow together into the other stores.” The rest is history. Whole Foods Mid-Atlantic and Mom Made have now been working together for 8.5 years. We are forever grateful for their strong support of our brand.

7) Seeing our product in the freezer of a new retailer. It is a long, tenuous process to sell to a new retailer. Months, sometimes years. It’s so rewarding to see Mom Made in a new home, knowing that new consumers will discover our products.

6) Moving from our basement in our home to a REAL office. It became official the day the Mom Made logo went up on the front door of the office. Walking through the Mom Made door every morning, I pinch myself at how lucky I am to get to work with such an amazing team and towards a mission of making kids healthier with our organic foods.

5) Hiring new team members. It’s tough to find individuals who hold the experience you’re looking for but also the passion for the mission of what Mom Made stands for. I remember clearly the first day of each of my colleagues joined the Mom Made team. I am so fortunate to work with such a talented group of dedicated professionals.

4) Support from my family, my husband and brother especially. My brother is a chef and helped in the early days with getting my home made recipes ready for large portions. He and his wife (who’s also a chef) have been very helpful along the way. My husband is frequently asked whether he works for Mom Made. His reply is that he’s the Chief Morale Officer. It’s so true and has been a critical piece for me personally on this journey but also as a sounding board for Mom Made as we've grown.

3) Launching a new product. It takes months (if not years in a few cases) to concept, test, design, produce and sell a new product to be ready for retail. Our most recent product launch was Gluten Free Cheesy Mac. Being onsite in our facility when the first products come off the line is very exciting.

2) Customer letters make our whole team happy. One day we received a letter from the Indiana mother of 5-year old, Adler, who  has brain cancer. Adler had no appetite but his favorite food was Mom Made’s Beef & Cheese Meatball Bites. We immediately stopped what we were doing and put an enormous case of meatballs in the mail with some fun goodies for Adler. We continue to keep Adler in our thoughts and prayers.

1) Mom Made is my third child. The team is part of my extended family. Every day, we laugh, goof around, support each other, challenge each other and work very hard together. There are no politics in our company and no one who doesn’t put in their very best effort. It’s so refreshing and fun to be a part of and lead this incredible team. It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come together and I have no doubt that we will be a household name in no time.

Happy 9th birthday, Mom Made!

Good gracious...Look what arrived in the mail today! I am truly honored to be named one of the top 25 leading ladies in Washington DC by the Washington Business Journal.

Sometimes I have to pinch myself because what started as a passion for making healthy foods for my kids and launched at the farmer's market has turned into something so much bigger with all that we do at Mom Made Foods. I get to work with an amazing team of staff and partners every day. And, collectively we help make kids healthier and parents lives a little easier by not having to worry about one more healthy meal for their kids.

The "Glamorous" Life as Mom Made CEO: Our Expansion into Northern California

Last week I answered a typical question from a friend, “What's new at Mom Made?” with a short explanation: "We're booming at Mom Made.  Just this month we've added new availability in Northern California, through Whole Foods and independent stores, in addition to the recent additions of chains up and down the east coast." Sometimes, like an echo in my own ear, I listen to how I answer these questions and have to pinch myself how far we’ve come in the 5.5 years we’ve been in business.  But I can't help but think about how much effort goes into our successes!  Some of my friends think that my job is ideal and glamorous.  I agree it’s ideal, I love working with our Mom Made team and love to be helping kids eat healthier every day!  But glamorous, ha!  Here’s a bit of the (not so) glamorous itinerary behind what it took to get to Northern California...

In September 2011, I left my husband and kids behind for a week and I flew out to the west coast.  Our Sales Director had other meetings in other areas of the country that same week so I traveled solo.  My team helped fill my schedule with sales meetings in Seattle and in/around the Northern California region. Throughout this whole journey, I travelled with my luggage, plus a cooler filled with frozen product samples, sales materials, my laptop, and often have to procure toaster ovens and microwaves!

Monday: Morning at the office in Alexandria Virginia; Afternoon flight from DC to Seattle; Rent car #1

Tuesday: Early morning sales meeting; Led late morning sales training; Afternoon flight to San Francisco; Rent car #2

Wednesday: Drive 1.5 hrs; Early morning meeting with Whole Foods Northern California; Drive 2 hrs; Afternoon sales meeting; Drive 2 hrs; Dinner with my college friend at the fabulous restaurant Chez Panisse!*

Thursday: Early morning flight back toSeattle; Rent car #3; Two sales meetings with local grocery chains.

Friday: Missed my crack-of-dawn flight from Seattle to DC by 60 seconds due to security hold up – took 18 hours to get back to DC; Cab from DC airport to a party to meet my husband because we had a babysitter booked…and I never like to miss a party!

So there you have a not-too-untypical week of travel on behalf of Mom Made Foods!  Fortunately, hard work does pay off as Mom Made is now in freezer aisles in Whole Foods Northern California, a new region that is filled with lots of organic-foods-loving-families who we know will love Mom Made.  All so worth it!

*The most glamorous part of my travels (and the best perk when business traveling) is always to meet up with old friends across the country!

5..4..3..2..1 Blog!

I am so excited!  We are launching the Mom Made Moms blog and invite our Mom Made Moms to begin sharing their stories here.  Our Mom Made Moms program is off to a great start, and reaching out to these moms all over the country has become one of my favorite things about working for Mom Made Foods!  The Mom Made Moms are a diverse group of people from all over the US.  Some have one child and others have a basketball team's worth.  I hear from moms who rarely buy or serve prepared foods to moms who rely heavily on them and are trying to make healthful changes in what they feed their families. Getting to interact with these customers is also a lot of fun!  Just recently I got to take a Mom Made Mom out for dinner while I was in Boston, and that rocked!  My goal with this blog is to provide a platform so we can all get to know the Mom Made Moms!  If you are interested in writing for this blog, please send me an email at jennifer at mommadefoods dot com.   If you want to sign up for the Mom Made Moms program, we'd love to have you!
